How the American Revolutionary War Started

A main cause of the war was that the Americans believed that they were enlighten to the full democratic rights of English men. The British believed American Colonies to be used in whatever way best suited Great Britain. There were many more causes.

The Battle of Blue Licks was one of the last battles of the revolutionary war. The Americans won the war on August 19, 1782.

The Tactics used in the American Revolutionary War

These are the main tactics that helped the Americans win the Revolution:

  • They developed a whole new range of weapons to fight with.

  • They lined up three rows deep, shoulder to shoulder. After firing several rounds both sides closed in and fought.

  • The colonist lived in their geographic area which gave them a greater advantage. They took advantage of this because the British didnt know about the land.

Weapons used in the American Revolutionary War

Important Weapons:



  • Muskets- main weapon of the American Revolutionary War. It is 62-75 inches long 

  • Cannon- they were considered the queens of the battle field. They usually shot a solid ball, a small shot, or sometimes shells

  • Shells- Hollow iron ball filled with black powder and fitted with a fuse. The shot used could be buckshot, a musket ball or grape shot (which are larger iron or lead balls about 1 inch in diameter)

Secondary Weapons: 

These weapons weren't as important but were still used in the war

  • Rifle-             

  • Pistol-

The Battles of the American Revolutionary War

There were many battles in the Revolutionary War:


  • Concord and Lexington- American militiamen fought 800 British troops on April 19, 1775




  • Trenton- Washington's army crossed the Delaware on December 26th

  • Bennington- British force was almost wiped out loosing 207 men (dead) and 700 captured


  • Valcour Bay- In 1776 Guy Carleton led a large force of British ships and moved down Lake Champlain


  • Chelsea Creek- the battle of Chelsea was the second military engagement of the Boston Campaign
